Domain SR10.4 Operating Environment
DN Series, and Series 400
Domain SR10.4 is the latest version of the Domain operating system for
HP DN Series, and HP 9000 Series 400 workstations. SR10.4 is a single
operating system that provides a choice of three operating system
environments: UNIX System V.3; BSD 4.3 and Aegis. Graphical interfaces
include the X Window System environment, Motif user interface, HP-VUE,
and Apollo Display Manager. SR10.4 also includes the Domain
Distributed Debugging Environment (DDE) - a powerful, multilanguage
debugging tool for large multiprocess, distributed applications.
Domain SR10.4 conforms to industry standards. Compliance with industry
standards provides application portability. Support has been added for
the HP 6300 20 GB Optical Jukebox connected via SCSI to the Series 425
and 433s. Access to the Optical Jukebox device is limited to those
Domain nodes on the network running SR10.4 or latter.
Domain SR10.4 provides binary compatibility with earlier SR10.x-based
releases. Some SR9.7 compatibility is retained: sys V and bsd 4.2
object files will execute.
The Domain/OS Upgrade path for an existing customer is to upgrade from
SR10.2, or SR10.3.x, directly to SR10.4.

Ease of Use - User Environment
HP-VUE 2.01:
Hewlett-Packard Visual User Environment (HP-VUE) 2.01 is an iconic,
mouse-driven, graphical user environment for HP-UX and Domain
workstations. HP-VUE provides user access to workstation power without
learning UNIX. HP-VUE 2.01 is a application built with the Motif 1.1
widgets and has five main components: File Manager, Workspace Manager,
Login Manager, Style Manager and Help Manager.
X Windows:
X11R4 runtime is included in SR10.4. The enhanced R2 share mode server
(exactly what was in SR10.3) will continue to be supported at SR10.4.
At install time a user can choose to install no X, the old server, the
new server or both (if they have a machine that will run with both).
When running X11R4, there is a user programmable "hot key" (default
<shift><ctrl>F9), that allows you switch between the DM and an X11R4
application. The current X11 enhanced R2 server is also provided and
supported on SR10.4. The UEDK 1.1 Development Kit is available as an
optional layered product and must be ordered to get X11R4 Development
capability.
Motif 1.1 runtime is provided as part of SR10.4. The Motif 1.1
development environment is available only with the UEDK 1.1 Development
Kit, an optional layered product. Motif 1.1 will work only with the
X11R4 server and not the enhanced X11R2 share mode server. The Motif
1.0 product will continue to be available for DN100x0 and provides
Motif 1.0 runtime and development.
**HP-VUE 2.01, the X11R4 server, and Motif 1.1 runtime are NOT
supported on the DN100x0**
Investment Protection through Standards Compliance
Hewlett-Packard is committed to implementing industry standards and is
actively involved in establishing those standards. Compliance with
these standards facilitates portability of applications developed on
other standards-based operating systems.
POSIX 1003.1- for general government and industry
XPG/3 - for European Government and Industry
SVID2 for general industry - only in Sys V.3 environment
X11R4 Window system
OSF Motif 1.1 - user interface
OSF OSC/AES - Application Environment
ANSI C - Language
FIPS 151-1 for USA Government
Support for IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), IEEE 802.5 (IBM Token Ring)
TCP/IP - internetwork
NFS 4.1 support
Bundled SNMP agent
Support for X.25
Choice of Development Environments
HP offers a full compliment of language products to address application
development needs. The core Domain languages for the DN Series and HP
9000 Series 400 workstations define high- performance, standards-
compliant language
products including:
C/ANSI C - Compiler
Fortran 77
Pascal
C++ Compiler, Translator, and Development Kit
Networking/Communications
Domain SR10.4 includes components for network communications via Local
Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and asynchronous
serial communications.
TCP/IP Networking
ARPA/Berkeley networking services
NFS 4.1
SNMP Agent
Mail, mailx, and sendmail
Network Computing System run-time components
Network License Server run-time components
NFS 4.1:
Domain NFS Version 4.1 include all of Sun/OS ONC 4.1 with the exception
of netdisk. In addition, NFS 4.1 contains numerous changes to base
Domian/OS functionality (including the kernel) for better integration
of NFS with Domain SR 10.4. To run NFS 4.1 software, users must have
Domain SR10.4 or later, with one or both of the BSD4.3 and Sys V.3
environments installed on the workstation. Domain/OS on the
workstation must be configured to run TCP/IP. Domain NFS 4.1 is
available as an optional layered product. Features include:
External pager for client I/O
[u]mount(1), [u]mount(2)
Sun 4.1 rpclib API and rpc.* applications
NIS
Remote lockf(2), lockd(8), statd(8)
// automounter
netgroups
exportfs
pcnfsd
Secure RPC
Integration of Domain LAN lockf() and NFS lockf()
Domain/OS License Options
At the time of purchase, a node license for the current version of the
operating system is included with the workstation. Customers must
purchase licenses to run optional Domain/OS software. The following
licenses are available:
Node License: A license to run an application on a single node;
each node using the application requires a license. Discounts
are per customer's appropriate discount schedule. Node license
products include media and documentation.
Development Node License: A type of Node License required for the
development of application software. Only required for nodes
doing development.
Run-Time Node License: A type of Node License required to run a
resultant application created using a development software
product. Note: some resultant applications do not require run-
time licenses.
Corporate License: Enables the purchase of quantities of
development or run-time licenses at a reduced price. Quantity
breaks are scheduled; customer discounts do not apply. Total
quantity must be on one purchase order. Network and
geographical restrictions do not apply. Media and documentation
are not included.
Gateway License: A communications product license which runs on a
single node and services users on other nodes. Only the server
node requires a license.
Domain Media and Documentation
Media and documentation for the Domain operating system are sold
separately. Domain SR10.4 Run-Time Environment is available on
Cartridge tape and 0.5 inch 1600 BPI Magnetic tape. Magnetic tape
customers now receive a boot cartridge tape instead of boot floppies.
SR10.4 is not available on CDROM. Domain SR10.4 hardcopy manuals are
available for general use, system administration, general programming,
and advanced usage.
